As Uber-Waymo partnership grows in Arizona, passengers see upside

Calling an Uber doesn’t necessarily mean calling an Uber driver anymore in the Valley.

Uber, the ride-hailing company, and Waymo, one of the companies seeking to popularize driverless cars, announced last May that Uber customers will have the option of getting “a fully autonomous, all-electric Waymo ride – with no human driver behind the wheel” in the parts of metro Phoenix where Waymo operates. Intel stock reaches heights not seen in nearly two years

Intel shares (Nasdaq: INTC) poked their head above $50 this week for the first time in nearly two years as investor faith in the chipmaker continued to recover. The stock closed at $50.82 on Wednesday, putting it up 106% from a 2023 nadir, a $24.63 adjusted close on Feb. 27. The Nasdaq composite index gained 31% in that period. Intel stock last closed above $50 on an adjusted basis — an important measure since the company this year slashed its dividend — on Jan. 19, 2022. Read more >>

Katie Schwertz of Edmund Optics Receives Prestigious SPIE Award

Katie Schwertz, senior engineering manager at Edmund Optics, received her BS in Optics from the University of Rochester’s Institute of Optics and her MS in Optical Sciences from the University of Arizona. For Edmund Optics, where she has been employed since 2010, she has also worked as an optomechanical engineer, an optical research engineer, and a senior design engineer, working on projects that have encompassed night vision eyepieces and infrared optics as well as executing and iterating optical subsystem designs, tolerancing, analyses, and prototype evaluations in compressed timeframes for both internal development and external customers. Mary Turner of Edmund Optics Receives Prestigious SPIE Award

Mary Turner, a Technical Fellow in Optical Design at Edmund Optics, has spent her career as an optical engineer sharing her knowledge with others. Having started her career as an electronics technician with the US Army, her areas of expertise have grown to include optical design software, stray light analysis, infrared optics, optical design, and illumination optics. A world-renowned leader in optical systems, Turner’s contributions have shaped generations of optical designers around the world, particularly in her highly regarded role as an educator of optical design. How a Valley startup is boosting tourism in Mexico with its travel app

A Phoenix-based startup is looking to make travel to Mexico easier through a new partnership with the country’s tourism officials.

GrinGO signed an agreement last month with the Angeles Verdes — a free roadside assistance program that operates under Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism — to provide information and resources to U.S. travelers.

GrinGO’s mobile app offers travel, safety and tourism resources, including hotel reservations, a language translator, currency exchange, information for medical and legal aid and roadside assistance.  Read more >>
