Mayo Clinic again recognized as top Phoenix-area hospital by U.S. News

Phoenix Business Journal

Several Phoenix hospitals were highlighted in the latest U.S. News & World report, with Mayo Clinic in Phoenix ranking at the top of the heap once again.

In the U.S. News 2024-2025 report of the best hospitals in the nation released on July 16, the Mayo Clinic’s Phoenix location was recognized as one of 20 hospitals in the nation in the report’s honor roll, in addition to the hospital’s main location in Rochester, Minnesota. It is the second-straight year the hospital made the magazine’s honor roll after being a late addition last year, and the 12th-straight year the hospital has led Arizona in the rankings.

Similar to the 2023-2024 edition of the report, Mayo Clinic had 10 of its adult specialties ranked. The highest-ranked specialty was in the Diabetes & Endocrinology category, coming in at No. 13.

The rest of Mayo Clinic’s specialties ranked as: No. 21 in Cancer; No. 27 in Cardiology, Heart & Vascular Surgery; No. 20 in Gastroenterology & GI Surgery; No. 20 in Geriatrics; No. 18 in Neurology & Neurosurgery; No. 19 in Orthopedics; No. 17 in Ear, Nose & Throat; No. 18 in Pulmonology & Lung Surgery; and No. 39 in Urology. Each category was similar to how the hospital ranked the year before.

Eleven hospitals in Arizona were included in the ranking of the state’s best hospitals, up from seven in 2023-2024. With Mayo Clinic taking the top spot, here’s how the rest of the Arizona rankings ended up:

  • Banner-University Medical Center Phoenix (No. 2)
  • Banner-University Medical Center Tucson (No. 3)
  • Chandler Regional Medical Center (No. 4)
  • TMC Healthcare-Tucson (No. 5)
  • St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center (tied-No. 6)
  • Banner Boswell Medical Center (tied-No. 6)
  • HonorHealth Scottsdale Shea Medical Center (tied-No. 6)
  • Mercy Gilbert Medical Center (tied-No. 9)
  • Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center (tied-No. 9)
  • Banner Desert Medical Center (No. 11)

U.S. News highlighted 466 of the nearly 5,000 hospitals it evaluated in the 2024-2025 best hospitals list, which is in its 35th year.

Among the new changes to methodology this year, U.S. News incorporated new data related to patients with medicare advantage insurance, nearly doubling the number of patients included in its annual data analysis. Additional changes were centered around equitable access to hospitals, inter-hospital transfers, outpatient outcomes, observation stays, rehabilitation, and the introduction of the comprehensive Gynecological Cancer Surgery rating.

“Choosing the right hospital to match your needs shouldn’t be a guessing game,” Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News, said in a statement. “The 2024-2025 edition of Best Hospitals provides patients and their families clear, data-driven insights on hospital performance and empowers Americans to choose the facility best suited to their specific health care needs.”
