Phoenix Community Alliance celebrates 40 Years in Downtown Phoenix
Phoenix Community Alliance (PCA), the business leadership and membership affiliate of Downtown Phoenix Inc. (DPI), has spent decades activating, advocating and building Greater Downtown Phoenix into what it is today, and now it’s time to celebrate 40 years of change-making and strategic growth.
Since August 1983, the organization has played a significant role in the development of landmark institutions that have contributed to the resurgence of Downtown Phoenix, projects that include:
- The revitalization of Margaret T. Hance Park, Phoenix’s 32.5-acre urban green space, where PCA committed to raising $45 million for Phase 1 of the project. Along with the development of the city’s premiere special event park, Steele Indian School Park.
- Advocacy for the adoption, funding, and construction of the light rail, which positively changed the narrative of transit accessibility for all and has expanded 26 miles and counting.
- Participation in the development of the 2004 Downtown Strategic Plan that led to the creation of the Arizona State University Downtown Campus. Phoenix Community Alliance will also have a hand in the development of the next iteration of the plan.
- Land assemblage for the Phoenix Bioscience Core, which encompasses the state’s three public research universities, along with a multitude of tech and start-up companies that are shaping the future of life science and innovation.
- The development and ideation of Arizona Center, which is historically known as a premiere shopping and entertainment destination that is currently undergoing a resurgence with new ownership at the helm. AC Hotel by Marriott recently moved into the Center, and a new residential tower, PALMtower Residences, will be completed on the property in early 2024.
- The Human Services Campus, the largest homeless services campus in the state, that required $25 million in fundraising, led in large part by PCA, to provide a comprehensive solution to the homelessness crisis in the early 2000s.
These are just a handful of PCA’s most notable contributions to date, and the organization continues to pave the way for change and advocate for its community and more than 300 Members surrounding some of today’s most pressing topics.
“The common thread that links our organization’s legacy initiatives to the important advocacy we lead today is the people,” said PCA board chair Diane Haller. “People who volunteer for our advocacy Committees are ready to roll up their sleeves and come to the table with an unwavering passion for this city and a steadfast belief that Downtown Phoenix can be a place where we can all flourish.”
To toast four decades of impact and set a course for the next 40 years, PCA will host a celebratory community event at One Arizona Center in early October.
“This is an important moment in PCA’s history,” said DPI President & CEO Devney Majerle. “A chance to honor the luminaries who built the organization and celebrate the strong and growing Membership that will lead us forward. The futures are bright for PCA and the Downtown it serves.”
